The second episode of Season 2, titled “What If… Peter Quill Attacked Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?”, commences in 1988. Peggy Carter and Howard Stark, following Earth’s shield of superheroes, realize that Peter is attempting to create a super-team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Several important figures in the Avengers universe are included in this team, such as Bill Foster, Hank Pym, Dr. Wendy Lawson, and King T’Chaka. Additionally, the Soviet Union has volunteered a spokesperson, the Winter Soldier. Although still operating under HYDRA programming, the team instantly recognizes him as Bucky Barnes.
Later on, Peter and Thor become a menace to Earth. Hank’s daughter, Hope, sees Peter as a misunderstood kid and decides to set him free using Hank’s shrinking machine. The Avengers then discuss whether to capture Peter and talk to him. Ultimately, they opt for a more direct approach and take aim at him with a sniper rifle.
In the later part of the story, the group’s decision takes a drastic turn upon Ego’s arrival, which prompts them to activate the seedling. Peggy and Thor, along with the others, engage in a fierce battle against Ego’s sand monsters. Meanwhile, Hank and Wendy try to persuade Peter before the Winter Soldier can take a shot.
We understand that everyone is currently dealing with difficult emotions. Peter is mourning his mother, Hank is mourning his wife, and Bucky is struggling with his sense of self and identity. Meanwhile, Peter feels that he must prevent his father from destroying the planet Earth.
