Rohtak district was named after its headquarters town, Rohtak, which is believed to be short for Rohtashgarh. This name is still used to refer to the ruined sites, also known as khokhrakot, of two older locations. One is located just north of the present town, while the other is about 5 kilometres towards the east. Legend has it that the city was established during the reign of Raja Rohtash, after whom it was traditionally named.
Another theory suggests that the town was named after the Roherra (Tacoma Undulate) tree, which is called Rohitaka in Sanskrit. Before the town’s creation, it is said to have been a forest of Rohitaka trees, which inspired the name Rohtak. Also, Rohitaka is mentioned in the Mahabharata, a Hindu epic, and is associated with Nakula, one of the Pandava warriors.

Asthal Bohar
Asthal Bohar, a location known for its math and ancient sculptured stone idols, sits 6 to 7 kilometers east of Rohtak city on Rohtak-Delhi N.H. 10. Legend has it that Pooran Bhagat of Sialkot, a disciple of Guru Gorakhnath, founded the site. Despite being ignored for a time, the math was revitalized in 1791 by Baba Mast Nath. Today, the math operates an Ayurvedic degree college, free hospital, Business Management Institute, engineering college, and other institutions.
Tilyar Convention Centre
Tilyar Tourist Complex, located in Rohtak on the Rohtak-Delhi National Highway No. 10, boasts a Convention Centre that can hold over 1,000 people. The complex spans 142 acres and offers a variety of amenities.

The town was supposedly re-established by a famous ruler, whose identity remains unknown. The Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Haryana, and Prof Manmohan Kumar of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak conducted a joint excavation of the site.
Ancient Site of Farmana
With a habitation deposit of 8.00 meters, the Mound (920×50) has revealed a fascinating variety of relics from the proto-historic era. These include early Harappan, Harappan, late Harappan, Painted Grey Ware, and early historical wares. The dig was led by a team of experts, including Prof. Vasant Shinde from Deccan College, Pune, Prof. Toshiki Osada from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto, Japan, and Prof. Manmohan Kumar from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Shahjahan ki Baoli
One of the most well-known water tanks in the region is the Choron ki Baoli, which is a stunning monument and an excellent example of preservation. The construction of this grand baoli was commissioned by Saidu Kala, a chobdar in the service of Emperor Shah Jahan, in the year 1658-59 AD, as stated by an inscription on the well. The structure is made up of intricate brickwork and kankar blocks, and is comprised of three tiers of 101 steps, each separated by landings and leading to the water tank. The circular well is situated at the base of the stairs.
