The Kos-minars, built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, are the earliest recorded examples of road milestones in Indian history. In 1619 AD, Emperor Jahangir instructed Bakir Khan, the Fauzdar of Multan, to construct a minaret at every Kos – a distance of approximately 3.22 kilometers or 2 miles – along the old imperial route. These minars are made of solid bricks and plaster, and stand atop a square platform. Each minar rises from a tapering octagonal base.
Buddhist Stupa Chaneti
The city of Shrughna, known today as Sugh, was a Buddhist hub during the rule of the Mauryan King Ashoka. According to Yuan Chwang’s travel account, the village of Chaneti, located 3 km northwest of Sugh, was home to several stupas and a monastery. The Chaneti stupa, constructed from baked bricks, featured a hemispherical shape created by concentric layers that were gradually added to the structure. Unlike comparable stupas in Taxila, such as the Shahpur and Dharmarajika stupas, Chaneti’s structure lacked a stone railing and might have had wooden railings instead. At the top of the stupa was a square space, approximately 1.5 meters in size, that held the harmika, a small platform that supported the chhatravali, or umbrella. During the Kushna Period, four shrines were added in each direction near the old circumambulatory path (Pradakshina Path) and a new pathway was built below for visitors to walk around the stupa.
